1. in + Dative

"in, on, at "

a. Ich esse in diesem Restaurant.

I eat in this restaurant.

b. Er arbeitet im Konsulat.

He works in the consulate.

c. Wir wohnen in dieser Strasse.

We live on ('in') this street.

d. Er ist gerade im Dorn.

He's in the cathedral just now.

e. Die Bank ist in der Schubertstrasse.

The bank is on (' in the') Schubertstrasse.

f. Sind Herr und Frau Allen im Kino?

Are Mr. and Mrs. Allen at ('in') the movies?

g. Er wohnt im Hotel Europa.

He lives in the Europa Hotel.

2. in + Accusative

"into, to"

a. Wir gehen ins Kino.

We’re going to the movies.

b. Fahren Sie heute in die Stadt?

Are you driving down town today?

c. In welches Theater gehen Sie?

What theater are you going to?

d. Wollen wir in den Park gehen?

Shall we go to the park?

e. Herr Köhler geht ins Hotel.

Mr. Köhler is going into the hotel.

f. Ich möchte gern ins cafe gehen.

I'd like to go to the cafe.

3. zu + Dative

"to"

a. Ich möchte zur Bank gehen.

I' d like to go to the bank.

b. Zu welcher Bank gehen Sie?

What bank are you going to?

c. Wollen wir einen Spaziergang zum Dom machen?

Shall we take a walk to the cathedral?

d. Wir können zum Ratskeller fahren.

We can drive to the 'Ratskeller'.

e. Wie kommt man am besten zum Flughafen?

What's the best way to get to the airport?

f. Sie fährt gerade zur Botschaft.

She's just driving to the Embassy.

4. neben + Dative

"next to, beside"

a. Ist der Ratskeller neben dem Rathaus?

Is the 'Ratskeller' next to the town hall?

b. Die Bank ist neben dem Hotel.

The bank is next to the hotel.

c. Die Haltestelle ist neben dem Konsulat.

The stop is next to the consulate.

d. Ist der Parkplatz neben der Bank?

Is the parking lot next to the bank?

e. Sie wohnen neben uns.

They live next (door) to us.

f. Welches Restaurant ist neben der Universität?

Which restaurant is next to the university?

5. an + Dative

"at, on"

a. Das Rathaus ist am Markt.

The town hall is at the market place.

b. Die Strassenbahnhaltestelle ist da drüben an der Ecke.

The streetcar stop is over there at the corner.

c. Dieser Autobus hält am Markt.

This bus stops at the market place.

d. Ist der Ratskeller auch am Markt?

Is the 'Ratskeller' at the market place too?

e. Der Polizist ist dort an der Ecke.

The policeman is there on the corner.


 

 

6. von + Dative

"of, from"

a. Das Museum ist nicht weit vom Rathaus.

The museum is not far from the town hall.

b. Das Museum ist in der Nähe von der Universität.

The museum is in the vicinity of the university.

c. Rechts vom Dom ist die Botschaft.

To the right of the cathedral is the embassy.

d. Gegenüber von diesem Hotel ist der Parkplatz.

Across from this hotel is the parking lot.

e. Links von der Bank ist das Stadttheater.

To the left of the bank is the municipal theater.

f. Der Omnibus hält gegenüber vom café.

The bus stops across from the café.

7. auf + Dative

"on. in"

a. Ich kann es Ihnen auf dem Stadtplan zeigen.

I can show it to you on the map of the city.

b. Die Strassenbahn hält auf der anderen Seite der Strasse.

The streetcar stops on the other side of the street.

c. Ich kann die Universität auf dem Stadtplan nicht finden.

I can't find the university on the map of the city.

d. Das Auto ist auf dem parkplatz.

The car is in ('on') the parking lot.

e. Der Polizist ist auf der anderen Seite der Strasse.

The policeman is on the other side of the street.

8. fahren mit + Dative

"to go on. in, by (a conveyance)"

a. Sie können mit dem Autobus fahren.

You can go on the bus.

b. Fahren Sie mit der Strassenbahn oder mit dem Auto?

Are you going by streetcar or in your car?

c. Mit welchem Autobus fährt er?

Which bus is he going on?

d. Ich will mit der Taxe fahren.

I want to go by taxi.

e. Er fährt heute mit dem Wagen.

He's going in his car today.

9. durch + Accusative

"through"

a. Der Omnibus fährt durch den Park.

The bus goes through the park.

b. Wir gehen jetzt durch den Park.

We're going through the park now.

c. Fahren Sie durch die Ludwigstrasse.

Drive through 'Ludwigstrasse'.

d. Sie können durch den Park gehen.

You can walk through the park.

e. Wollen wir durch die Stadt fahren?

Shall we drive through town?

10. sollen

"to be supposed to"

a. Das Bier soll hier sehr gut sein.

The beer is supposed to be very good here.

b. Das Schloss soll sehr berühmt sein.

The palace is supposed to be very famous.

c. Die Haltestelle soll nicht weit von hier sein.

The stop is supposed to be not far from here.

d. Soll der Bahnhof nicht hier in der Nähe sein?

Isn't the station supposed to be here in the vicinity?

e. Das Hotel soll sehr gut sein.

The hotel is supposed to be very good.

f. Sie sollen sehr nett sein.

They're supposed to be very nice.

11. wir wollen + Infinitive

"shall we"

a. Wollen wir jetzt ins Kino gehen?

Shall we go to the movies now?

b. Wollen wir einen Spaziergang machen?

Shall we take a walk?

c. Wollen wir ein Glas Bier trinken?

Shall we have a glass of beer?

d. Wollen wir den Wachtmeister fragen?

12. mit + Dative

"with, to"

a. Sie können mit dem Polizisten sprechen.

You can talk to the policeman.

b. Er möchte mit uns ins Theater gehen.

He'd like to go to the theater with us.

c. Ich gehe heute mit Herrn Köhler in die Stadt.

I’m going downtown with Mr. Köhler today.

d. Er spricht gerade mit dem Wachtmeister.

He's just talking to the officer.

e. Ich gehe mit dieser Dame heute ins Kino.

I'm going to the movies with this lady today.

f. Mit welchem Ober spricht er gerade?

Which waiter is he (just) talking to?

13. suchen

"to look for"

a. Sie sucht gerade den Koffer.

She's just looking for the suitcase.

b. Was suchen Sie?

What are you looking for?

c. Er sucht den Pass.

He's looking for the passport.

d. Suchen Sie den Parkplatz?

Are you looking for the parking lot?

e. Ich suche die Adresse von Fräulein Schneider.

I’ m looking for Miss Schneider's address.

14. fragen

"to ask"

a. Wir wollen den Portier fragen.

Let's ask the doorman. ('Why don't we ask ... ?' )

b. Fragen Sie bitte den Polizisten.

Ask the policeman please.

c. Er fragt den Ober.

He's asking the waiter.

d. Ich frage den Wachtmeister.

I’m going to ask the (police) officer.

e. Können Sie nicht Frau Kunze fragen?

Can't you ask Mrs. Kunze?

15. trinken

"to drink, to have (to drink)"

a. Was möchten Sie trinken?

What would you like to drink?

b. Er trinkt ein Glas Bier.

He's drinking a glass of beer.

c. Trinken Sie Kaffee oder Tee?

Are you having coffee or tea?

d. Ich trinke gern Wein.

I like ('to drink') wine.

e. Möchten Sie etwas Wasser trinken?

Would you like some water to drink?

16. parken - "to park"

 

a. Sie können dort drüben parken.

You can park over there.

b. Ich parke auf dem Parkplatz in der Schubertstrasse.

I’ll park in the parking lot on Schubertstrasse.

c. Er parkt auf der anderen Seite der Strasse.

He parks on the other side of the street.

d. Ich parke sehr oft auf diesem Parkplatz.

I very often park in this parking lot.

e. Kann man hier auf der Strasse parken?

Can one park here on the street?

17. halten

"to stop"

a. Hält der Omnibus hier?

Is this where the bus stops? ('Does the bus stop here?')

b. Wo hält die Strassenbahn?

Where does the streetcar stop?

c. Ich halte gegenüber vom Hotel.

I’ll stop across from the hotel.

d. Halten Sie bitte bei der Botschaft.

Stop at the embassy please.

e. Der Autobus soll an dieser Ecke halten.

The bus is supposed to stop at this corner.
