The
following vocabulary items have all occurred in the basic sentences of
this lesson. A group of four or more sentences illustrates the use of
each item. Repeat
the sentences after your instructor: then cover the left-hand side of
the page
and give the German again, using the English text as a reminder.
1. ungefähr
- "about, approximately"
a. Wir bleiben ungefähr zwei Wochen hier. |
We're
staying here approximately two weeks. |
b. Ich habe ungefähr drei Mark bei mir. |
I've got about three Marks on me. |
c. Er kommt in ungefähr vier Wochen. |
He's coming in about four weeks. |
d. Es kostet ungefähr zehn Mark. |
It costs approximately ten Marks. |
2. bis.
- "until, to (or)"
a. Ich bleibe bis drei Uhr. |
I’m
staying until three o'clock. |
b. Wir bleiben sechs bis acht Wochen in
Deutschland. |
We're
going to stay six to eight weeks in |
c. Er fährt zwei bis drei Wochen auf Besuch nach
Amerika. |
He's
going for a visit to |
d. Er ist von neun bis eins im Konsulat. |
He's
at the consulate from nine until one. |
3. passen
(gut) - "to be convenient"
a. Sein Besuch passt mir heute nicht gut. |
His
visit is not convenient for me today. |
b. Heute passt es meiner Frau sehr gut. |
It'll
be very convenient for my wife today. |
c. Am Sonntag um vier Uhr passt es uns gut. |
Sunday at four o'clock is fine for us. |
d. Heute passt es ihm nicnt gut. |
It's not convenient for him today. |
e. Passt es Ihrem Sohn am Dienstag? |
Is
it convenient for your son on Tuesday? |
4.
um ... Uhr - "at … 0'clock"
a. Um wieviel Uhr kommen Sie? |
What
time are you coming? |
b. Ich treffe sie um acht Uhr im Café. |
I'm
meeting her at eight o'clock at the café |
c. Wir essen um sieben Uhr. |
We eat at seven. |
d. Der Autobus fährt um zehn Uhr. |
The bus goes at ten o'clock. |
5.
recht (with dative form of pronoun) - "all right (with
someone)"
a. Ist Ihnen das recht? |
Is
that all right with you? |
b. Hoffentlich ist es Ihrer Frau auch recht. |
I
hope it's all right with your wife too. |
c. Das ist uns recht. |
That's all right with us. |
d. Ist das dem Konsul nicht recht? |
Isn't that all right with the consul? |
e. Ich glaube, es ist ihm recht. |
I think it’s all right with him. |
6. grüssen
(with accusative form) - "to give one's regards to,
to greet"
a. Grüssen Sie Ihre Frau Gemahlin. |
Give my regards to your wife. |
b. Bitte grüssen Sie Ihren Sohn. |
Please give my regards to your son. |
c. Bitte grüssen Sie Ihre Eltern. |
Please give my regards to your parents. |
d. Grüssen Sie Herrn Becker bitte. |
Give my regards to Mr. Becker, please. |
7. mehr
- "more, left (over)"
a. Ich habe keinen Tabak mehr. |
I don't have any tobacco left. |
b. Wir haben heute keine Milch mehr. |
We don't have any more milk today. |
c. Ich habe leider kein Geld mehr. |
Unfortunately
I don't have any money left. |
d. Es gibt hier keinen Wein mehr. |
There
isn't any more wine here. |
e. Ich habe auch keine Zigaretten mehr. |
I
don't have any cigarettes left either. |
8.
hören - "to hear"
a. Ich höre, Sie wollen nach Deutschland fahren. |
I hear you're planning to go

c. Ich höre, er kommt am Dienstag auf Besuch. |
I

9. machen
- "to take (a walk, trip, etc.)"
a. Sie machen einen Spaziergang durch den Park. |
They take a walk through the park. |
b. Wir wollen jetzt noch einen Spaziergang machen. |
Let's just take a walk now. |
c. Möchten Sie mit uns einen Spaziergang machen? |
Would you like to take a walk with us? |
d. Er macht eine Geschäftsreise nach Amerika. |
He's

10. für
(with accusative form) - "for"
a. Was kann ich für Sie tun? |

11. bei
(with dative form) - "with, at; by, beside"
a. Ich habe keinen Tabak bei mir. |
I don't have any tobacco with me. |
b. Meine Koffer sind beim Zoll. |
My suitcases are at the customs office. |
c. Er bleibt sechs Wochen bei uns. |
He's
staying with us (at our house) for six weeks. |
d. Er wohnt bei seinen Eltern. |

I

schade - "too bad"
a. Schade, ich habe keinen Tabak mehr. |
Too
bad; I don't have any tobacco left. |

c. Schade, aber am Sonntag passt es mir nicht gut. |

13. aus
(with dative form) - "from, out of"
a. Er kommt aus Deutschland. |
He comes from Germany. |
b. Sie kommen gerade aus dem Restaurant. |
They're
just coming out of the restaurant. |
c. Kommen Sie um vier Uhr oder um fünf Uhr aus dem
Kino? |
Will
you be coming out of the movies at four or at five o'clock? |
d. Ich glaube, wir kommen um zehn Uhr aus dem
